Darling child’s play set

What a great Christmas present for the grandchildren!

Two chairs (one with arms) a table and a bench with the seat that opens to store toys.

The pattern is of fairy tale characters – most of whom we recognize such as Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Old King Cole, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood as well as a few we can’t figure out!

So come on in and see if you can recognize the rest.

Set is in terrific condition. Late 60s, early 70s. $295

Lovely lady figurine

This beautiful mid-century lady was made in Japan and imported to Canada by “Giftcraft”. She is obviously a take on a Royal Doulton figurine.

Giftcraft is a Canadian company founded in Toronto in the mid 1940s and still in business!

This lovely lady has her original sticker and is beautifully made, featuring hand-painted detailing and a soft glaze. No breaks or cracks. Nine inches tall.

Freshly picked by Thelma Bliss, senior director, Research and Acquisitions (our Mum)!!

Hull “Brown Drip” pottery

Made between 1965 and the company’s closing in 1985, Brown Drip ware signified the end of the art pottery design phase at Hull. The pottery then turned to what it called its “House and Garden” line in the face of increased overseas competition.

Very popular at the time, Hull “Brown Drip” pottery continues to be collectible .

We were lucky to get all these pieces from the same collector.

Cornmeal waffles, anyone?

Just in to the store today is this beautiful Deco waffle maker with its wing handles of bakelite. It heats up quickly and should work well – though, sadly, I have no batter here at the store to make you any.

It is pictured with this collector’s grouping of 24 volumes of the 1952 Encyclopedia of Cooking which includes such booklets as “Body Building Recipes for Children” (liver soup anyone?),  and “2000 Useful Facts about Food”!

Here is the recipe for Corn-meal waffles from the illustrated page of volume 19 : 250 Breads, Biscuits and Rolls.

2 cups cornmeal
3 cups water
2 tsp salt
2 tbsp shortening
4 eggs
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup sweet milk
1 and 1/4 cups of buttermilk.

Cook corn meal, water, salt and shortening in double boiler 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Cool. Beat eggs until very light and add to mush. Sift flour with soda and add alternately with sweet milk to mush. Add enough buttermilk to make a thin batter. Bake in hot waffle iron until brown. Makes 12 waffles.

A barkcloth bedroom

How about a 1950s barkcloth bedroom?

These curtains (we have a pair) are lined and feature French pleats. And the single bedspread hangs beautifully.

The motif is an Oriental design with people, bridges and trees on a cream background.

The fabric is referenced on page 123 of Margaret Meier’s book called “Vintage Textured Barkcloth” by Schiffer Publishing.

Above the bed we have hung our metal faux bamboo Chinese Chippendale chandelier.

Quite the look!

Stunningly beautiful vintage barkcloth curtains and bedspread. There are two lined curtain panels with French pleats and a single bed coverlet. Strong vibrant colours and gorgeous condition. $325 for the set 1950s "Chinese Chippendale" metal chandelier in faux bamboo. $425 Mahogany bed $195.
